DM Sans was commissioned for DeepMind under the creative direction of design consultancy MultiAdaptor, developed by the British studio Colophon Foundry, and released through Google Fonts in 2019. The project began with the Latin glyph set of Jonny Pinhorn’s Poppins for Indian Type Foundry, adjusting its geometric forms for smaller text and digital interfaces. Colophon relaxed the reliance on compass-drawn shapes to create a reading face suited to software controls and technical copy. A 2023 update expanded the variable weight range to 100–1000 and introduced a dedicated optical-size axis.
The face retains the circular bowls and even strokes associated with the geometric sans-serif tradition, balanced by optical adjustments for screen use. A pronounced x-height gives lowercase letters a clear presence within buttons, cards, and data tables. Curves and stroke junctions are adjusted to distribute weight more evenly, while the apertures of letters such as c and e remain relatively open. The optical-size axis changes outlines and spacing across the size range: smaller settings allow more room between forms, while larger settings produce a tighter texture. Its stylistic sets offer further choices in letter construction, punctuation, figures, and arrows without changing the family’s underlying character.
DM Sans works well in product design systems, application interfaces, dashboards, responsive navigation, and supporting text. Its geometric forms provide a consistent visual rhythm across controls and headings. Within the DeepMind suite, it can handle functional information alongside the more expressive DM Serif families or the fixed-pitch DM Mono. The broad weight range and companion italics support a varied hierarchy while keeping the overall voice consistent.

With matted beard, and swathed in a bristling shark-skin apron, about mid-day, Perth was standing between his forge and anvil, the latter placed upon an iron-wood log, with one hand holding a pike-head in the coals, and with the other at his forge’s lungs, when Captain Ahab came along, carrying in his hand a small rusty-looking leathern bag. While yet a little distance from the forge, moody Ahab paused; till at last, Perth, withdrawing his iron from the fire, began hammering it upon the anvil—the red mass sending off the sparks in thick hovering flights, some of which flew close to Ahab. “Are these thy Mother Carey’s chickens, Perth? they are always flying in thy wake; birds of good omen, too, but not to all;—look here, they burn; but thou—thou liv’st among them without a scorch.” “Because I am scorched all over, Captain Ahab,” answered Perth, resting for a moment on his hammer; “I am past scorching; not easily can’st thou scorch a scar.” “Well, well; no more. Thy shrunk voice sounds too calmly, sanely woeful to me. In no Paradise myself, I am impatient of all misery in others that is not mad. Thou should’st go mad, blacksmith; say, why dost thou not go mad? How can’st thou endure without being mad? Do the heavens yet hate thee, that thou can’st not go mad?—What wert thou making there?”
